The Social Media Smith
We recently held a Social Media for Small Business workshop in partnership with the Woburn Public Library. Our presenter, Amy Smith works with small business owners and entrepeneurs, helping them develop social media strategies. She emphasized the social aspect of social media and encouraged attendees to think in terms of creating a digital village.
What are your goals?
Consider what you are trying to accomplish and who you are trying to reach. Keep in mind that your ultimate goal is to drive people to your website (always have a website!).
To accomplish your goals, you are looking to create content and establish credibility. You are also looking to build engagement through likes, shares and comments. Amy advises you to be judicious, but definitely add a call to action from time to time. For example, adding some version of: “Learn More”, “Share”, “Tell us what you think”, and “Donate Now” can encourage people to engage and give you opportunity to connect personally.
A content calendar is a way for you to intentionally manage your social media postings. Planning in advance what will go out and when, means you can “schedule it and forget it”. The content you post should be relevant to your business and help to establish your credibility. For example, a landscaping company can schedule weekly lawncare tips, gardening advise and customer testimonials. As a business, you do not need to post all of the time but you do need to build engagement to be seen.
Our workshop was generously hosted by MindTrek VR. We felt this was the perfect location for several reasons. First, it is located directly behind the WPL’s temporary space in Cummings Park. Second, their business is a great example of how social media can be used to grow your brand and build excitement! Third, we really wanted to try out the VR experience (You can see our fierce zombie killing crew below)!
